John and I purchased our farm homestead in 2002. At the time, it was a working almond and walnut orchard. The almonds were harvested and sold by a local processor. We did all the other work in maintaining the orchard. After I quit my job as a school principal, I decided I wanted to try selling almond meal and flour directly and started Nut-N-Other Farms. Today, we sell all of our almonds and walnuts directly to customers, either as nuts or as flour or meal.
Along the way, we added chickens and turkeys and we also expanded our garden and orchard. We have added many other varieties of trees and plants that produce food for us. We bring artichokes, pomegranates and any other extra produce when it is in abundance. It is truly rewarding to have customers thank us for providing healthy food products.
I love living on a farm and doing what I do. It’s work and at times not easy, but it is rewarding. Eating meals that we can say grew from our farm is a blessing. I’ve learned how to can and freeze many items I had no idea I could preserve. We enjoy eating our homemade tomato sauce, walnut pesto, fruit jams, farm fresh eggs and poultry. We freeze orange juice and pomegranate seeds and enjoy drinking fresh juices throughout the year. We also freeze soup stock from our farm grown poultry. John makes a delicious crock pot chicken stew with old hens…you’d never know because the meat is so tender and juicy. And when we don’t sell out of eggs, I love to bake Angel Food Cake from scratch…it takes 12 egg whites! The dogs just love Angel Food Cake…they get the egg yolks!
John stays busy practicing energy and wine law. He is also an author for a law text book. In 2008 his first novel, The Lincoln Secret, was released (by Martin Pearl Publishing www.martinpearl.com …starting a publishing company was yet another endeavor I took on to help John achieve his dream and I am enjoying the journey in helping others fulfill their dreams). The Lincoln Secret is a historical mystery adventure novel set in modern day America. http://www.thelincolnsecret.com.
